At a glance
A practical moving-day checklist for packing an open first box with the essentials you need during the first 24 hours in a new home.
Move-in day checklist
Your first-night survival kit.
The Open First box is the box you do not want buried at the back of the van. It holds the things you will need before you have the time, energy or floor space to unpack properly.
Think of it less like a moving box and more like a short-stay kit. If you were arriving late, tired and hungry, what would make the first evening and next morning easier?
Pack the basics you will reach for immediately
- Kitchen basics: a kettle, mugs, tea or coffee, a few snacks, water bottles and something easy for breakfast.
- Bathroom essentials: toilet roll, hand soap, toothpaste, shower gel, towels and cleaning wipes.
- Sleep and comfort: pyjamas, bed sheets, pillows, a change of clothes and any comfort items children may need.
- Tech: phone chargers, power banks, laptop chargers and any work or study kit needed the next day.
- Practical tools: scissors, a utility knife, screwdriver, bin bags, tape, light bulbs and basic cleaning supplies.
- Daily needs: medication, glasses, pet food, pet bowls, baby supplies and anything that cannot wait until tomorrow.
- Important documents: IDs, keys, tenancy paperwork, passports, insurance details and meter readings.
Keep it visible and separate
Do not pack your Open First items across several boxes. Use one clearly marked box or bag, keep it near the door, and avoid letting it disappear into long-term storage. For many moves, it is worth carrying this box in your own car if possible.
If you have a large household, consider one Open First box for the home and one small personal bag per person. That prevents one box from becoming overloaded with everything from toothbrushes to school shoes.
Make the label useful without listing everything
A big “Open First” label is helpful. A full contents list on the outside is not always necessary, especially if the box contains documents, medication, electronics or personal items.
PackQR helps by letting you keep the outside label simple while storing the detailed contents privately in the app. You can flag a box as “Unpack first”, “Fragile”, “Heavy” or “Paperwork”, then scan it later to see the full record before you open it.
Moving day is easier when the first box is obvious
The goal is not to unpack perfectly on day one. It is to avoid unnecessary frustration. A good Open First box means you can make a drink, charge your phone, wash your hands, make the beds and find the essentials without tearing through ten boxes first.
