Long-term storage

Most garages become cluttered because the contents are invisible. Boxes get stacked, pushed to the back, moved around and eventually absorbed into the scenery. After a while, nobody wants to open them because one search can turn into an afternoon of lifting, dust and repacking.
You may not need more space. You may simply need a better way to know what is already there.
Group boxes by how you use them
Start with categories that match real life, not perfect filing-cabinet logic. Useful garage categories might include holiday decorations, tools, sports gear, keepsakes, DIY supplies, documents, garden items, spare cables or children’s outgrown belongings.
Once items are grouped, store the boxes so the most frequently used categories are easiest to reach. Seasonal and long-term boxes can sit higher or further back, but they should still be recorded.
Label every box before it reaches the shelf
The best time to label a storage box is before it disappears into a stack. Give each box a clear number, a broad category and any handling note that matters, such as “Heavy”, “Fragile” or “Keep dry”.
Avoid relying on labels such as “Misc” or “Garage”. They feel quick now, but they create the exact problem you will be dealing with six months from now.
Create a searchable record
A simple inventory turns garage storage into something you can search. Record the main contents while the box is still open: “Christmas lights”, “camping stove”, “bike pump”, “paint rollers” or “old school photos”.

Plan for dark corners and awkward shelves
Garage storage is rarely well lit. Boxes end up under shelves, behind bicycles or in corners where the label is hard to see. PackQR includes a torch control on the scanning screen, so you can light the label while you scan without juggling a separate flashlight.
The aim is simple: fewer mystery boxes, fewer wasted weekends and less buying duplicates of things you already own.
